The last few months, I have had the privilege of coaching Bloomsburg High School field hockey team. I’ve seen some of these girls grow athletically, mentally and push there bodies to the breaking point. Today marks the end of our season after a tough 1-2 game in the semi-finals of our district playoffs. After our loss today there were four broken hearted seniors that made me remember what it was like to be a part of a team and a community.
This season fell a little shorter than expected. If we won the game today we would have moved on to battle for the district title and been down the road to states, prolonging our season by 2 or 3 weeks. To say the least, the girls weren’t ready for the season to end and we definitely didn’t expect to lose.
Coaching has not only taught me to be a leader, but it also made me remember the incredible feeling and unity that comes from being a member of a team. I had forgotten the feeling you get when that buzzer goes off and you realize you just beat your biggest rival in the district. At that moment, knowing all of your hard work for the last year has been for that moment.
BHSFH, thanks for letting me have one more year on the team.
